Windows may detect a Mac drive without opening its APFS or HFS+ volume. These five routes cover healthy disks, deleted files, damaged partitions, plus physical failure.
Connect the Mac drive to the PC, confirm it appears in Disk Management, then scan the entire physical disk with Disk Drill. Recover files to a separate drive. If the disk clicks or keeps disconnecting, stop using software plus contact a recovery lab.
Do not click Initialize, Format, or Repair when Windows prompts you. Those actions can overwrite file-system data. Never save recovered files back onto the Mac drive.

A normal scan is reasonable if the disk spins smoothly, stays connected, plus appears at its correct capacity. It is a poor gamble if the drive clicks, scrapes, beeps, overheats, or repeatedly drops offline.
One more scan can feel harmless, yet a failing mechanical drive may lose readable sectors each time it starts. Shut it down if the files cannot be replaced.
Recent Mac disks commonly use APFS, while older ones often use HFS+. Windows may list the physical device in Disk Management without assigning a usable drive letter because File Explorer does not natively browse those formats.
This does not prove the files are gone. It only means Windows needs recovery software, a compatible file-system reader, or a Mac acting as the bridge.
Remove the Mac hard drive only if that can be done safely, then connect it to the PC through a compatible SATA, USB, or NVMe enclosure. Disk Drill can scan Mac-formatted storage from Windows, so Windows Explorer does not need to open the volume first.

Software cannot repair failed heads, damaged platters, burned controller boards, or severe NAND faults. A lab can stabilize the hardware, image it with specialized equipment, then return recovered data on a Windows-readable disk.
Disk Drill on Windows is the practical first move when the Mac drive appears in Disk Management but its files remain inaccessible. Use a working Mac plus an exFAT disk if the source opens normally. Image an unstable disk before scanning, use a backup when available, or stop immediately if the hardware shows physical failure.
